K.E. Sutherland, the alleged author—we’re not sure if he’s a Network simulation, his supposed creations designed and curated for public consumption—is a lifelong zombie, partially awake, yet wholly submerged in various simulations.
It is said that he hears voices, like the characters in his untruths. Chaotic messages of freedom, truth, progress, despair and hope. To Society’s detriment, he feels the need to share these dysfunctions.
He finds the most enjoyment in the Network BioSim Exemption, although the suspected author also finds utility in the Travel and Athletics Exemptions, though he wastes the majority of his time utilizing the Retro freedom to spread lies both large and small—a horrible mistake of the past—in an attempt to entertain and misguide the masses.
Stuck in the SubLevels for most of his life, he has recently endeavored to view what exists above, ostensibly to gain a different perspective on this human condition. This need for change may be due to gaps in his programming or maybe this was the intention of the programming all along. One can never truly say what the intention or purpose of the Network is, but to drive us Forward to a new and better Future.
Considering his past in the SubLevels, as well as a short stint in a Reclaimed Zone, the voices and visions he writes of, his version of one potential future is not to be trusted.
Investigators have found some of the underlying messages to be inspiring, while others are deemed alarmist, with the intention of confusing and frightening the reader, of casting doubt on the Network and Society as a whole. Others
say the purported author is an agent of the Network, either unknowing or not, spreading the messages the Network needs some people—the people who would be curious enough to consume these types of lies—are meant to hear.
Maybe it’s to help sort and categorize the culprits for their impending adjudication. The truth of the matter may never be discovered. As one of the characters in his deception explains, “The Machine never loses.” Another character tells of having to “play the game to its conclusion.” And the so-called author would have us believe that we are all playing the game, whether we know it or not, and thus, we are all, in some part large or small, writing this story.
